Lysaght Watt Trust Art Award

2018 First Overall Winner Nour Hassan with her artwork ‘Beat’.

Next round in 2020

The Lysaght Watt Gallery has successfully run the annual Lysaght Watt Trust Art Award for 5 years. We have recently completed a review of our popular competition, and as a result we have decided to run biennially instead.

The next Award will be be held mid 2020, with the date yet to be set in concrete. This necessary postponement will hopefully allow people plenty of time to get their creative juices flowing!

In 2018 we announced the theme of Time Out for the 2019 Award. Instead, this theme will carry over to the 2020 Award.

Applications will be open at the beginning of 2020, and advertising will commence later in 2019. We apologise for any inconvenience caused, and look forward to seeing your entries.

History

The inaugural Lysaght Watt Trust Art Award was held in 2013 at the Lysaght Watt Gallery in Hawera, South Taranaki.

The major prize of $3000 (sponsored by the Lysaght Watt Trust), as well as several other sponsored prizes, continues to draw entries from artists throughout New Zealand. Now in its sixth year, the Award has grown in national awareness.

A different theme is selected annually, with past themes including Daily life, Yin Yang, Self Portrait and Rising.

An esteemed member of the New Zealand Art community is invited each year to choose the overall winner. They also choose the winners of the individual prize categories, including 3D, 2D and Local Artist. A gala evening is held at the Lysaght Watt Gallery to announce the winners and open the exhibition. The People’s Choice Award is given to the artwork with the most votes from the public by the end of the show.
