Leading textile artist, Ron Te Kawa and other South Taranaki artists will be showcasing their textile artworks at the Lysaght Watt Gallery titled, "Born Under A Lucky Star." This exhibition will run from 10 August to 14 September 2026.
The textile artworks featured were produced by 30 keen creatives aged 9 years to 70+ years, who had all participated in textile art workshops led by Maungarongo (Ron) Te Kawa (Ngati Porou). The workshops took place on July 18 and 19 at the Normanby Recreation Centre and were facilitated by the STDC Arts Co-ordinator, Michaela Stoneman.
Renowned Aotearoa textile artist, Maungarongo (Ron) Te Kawa (Ngati Porou) exhibits regularly in public galleries throughout the country and has gained international residences. "Running wananga (workshops) is the fun side of my art practice, holding space for people to play and make in a fun, non-judgemental safe space. We learn together, everyone brings something special into the room".
The STDC Arts Co-ordinator says "Inclusions and participation were paramount for this project. The cost was only $10 to attend, which included demonstrations, and a wide range of art materials. Nourishing lunches were cooked onsite to help fuel the creativity and provide solid manaakitanga for all."
When asked about the exhibition's theme, Ron says "The title of the exhibition is about being grateful. "Born Under A Lucky Star" refers to all healing coming from nature - and that we are always being guided by Te Taiao. It refers to having gratitude for time and space to create together. It's drawing on our own highest enery, and manifesting that the best is yet to come."
The opening event will be held at the gallery on Sunday 9 August at 5:00 pm. We warmly invite all to come along and celebrate the successes of Ron Te Kawa and other South Taranaki textile artists. This exhibition will display a vibrant array of colours and energy that mirrors the region's rich creativity. We hope to see you there!
