Te Kura o Matariki Whakairo | Māori Wood Carving

Updated: 5 days ago

From Monday 3rd of November 2025, we are proud to exhibit a stunning collection of original Māori wood carvings presented by Te Kura o Matariki Whakairo. The carvings capture the students' year-long journey of cultural discovery and creative expression, presenting a powerful visual narrative of their learning experiences.

The collections are student projects showcasing their deep engagement with Te Ao Māori - where tradition meets contemporary expression. The ākonga (student) tells the story of reconnection, growth and identity. Under the guidance of their dedicated kaiako (teacher), Meka Mauriri, the kaiako helps nurture and shape the journey of the ākonga as their wood carvings begin to take form.

The Māori Wood Carving art exhibition will be open to the public from Monday 3rd November to Saturday 13th December 2025, with the opening event starting at 5:30 pm. Free Entry. For details on our normal opening hours, please visit our website at https://lysaghtwattgallery.co.nz.

We invite you to come and experience this remarkable display of culture, creativity, and personal growth. We look forward to seeing you there!
